No names have been mentioned, but it’s known that Posh want players with Championship experience to help them survive in the second tier next season.
Posh co-owner Darragh MacAnthony said: “I’ve had several chats with agents and players who are out of contract and it’s remarkable that some still expect wages in the region of £50k a week.
“Obviously they won’t be getting that here.
“I have lists of players who have become available since the end of last season. There aren’t many surprise names on them.
“Trust me, myself, Barry Fry and Darren Ferguson are working hard on them.”
MacAnthony believes Posh need eight new players to build a squad able to compete at Championship level. He says six bids have already been made.
“We want to thrive in the Championship,” MacAnthony added. “We’re not going up there just to try and survive.”
It’s thought Posh are unlikely to sign anyone this month to avoid paying June wages, but MacAnthony and Ferguson would doubtless like newcomers to be on the plane to Portugal for the pre-season training camp in July.
The Peterborough Telegraph has a list of available, potential and downright fanciful targets right here...

17.
ADAM REACH: Position: Midfield. Age: 28. Status: Released by Sheffield Wednesday so a free agent. Reach ticks a lot of the Posh boxes. Central midfield needs strengthening and he has vast experience of the Championship, making over 200 appearances for Wednesday. He scores goals as well. Reach has the physicality Posh believe is vital in the second tier, but, and there's always a but, he seems certain to be of interest to other Championship clubs. Remarkably Premier League Norwich City have reportedly been keeping an eye on Reach's situation, but that would surely be a step too far. Reach would be a great Posh signing, but Posh would be probably be way down the player's list of preferable moves. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images).

GEORGE MONCUR: Position: Midfield. Age: 27. Current status: Released by Luton so a free agent. Posh tried to sign Moncur for £500k in the summer of 2016, but he preferred to join Barnsley in the Championship. He was soon loaned to Posh, but failed to make much of an impression. Moncur joined Luton in time to help them win promotion from League One in the 2018-19 season, but he started just 15 Championship matches in two seasons for the Hatters. Luton are one of the teams Posh might have to finish above to stay up next season so cast-offs from Kenilworth Road are not ideal. We all know Ferguson loves a flair player though and Moncur could challenge for the number 10 role, although whether or not he's as keen as Sammie Szmodics on pressing opponents is open to debate. Actually it's not. He wouldn't be. (Photo by Nick Potts - Pool/Getty Images).

JORDAN COUSINS: Position: Central midfield. Age: 27. Status: Released by Stoke City so a free agent. Cousins was largely on the fringes at Stoke City in his two years at the club, but he was popular among teammates and fans alike for his wholehearted, committed displays. Cousins has also played for QPR and Charlton in the Championship and is well suited to a defensive midfield role. He's expected to stay in the Championship and it wouldn't be the greatest surprise if Posh made an approach. (Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images).

MATTY JAMES: Position: Central midfielder. Age: 29. Status: Released by Leicester City so a free agent. This classy midfielder has endured an injury-ravaged career, but managed to make 39 Championship appearances in spells at Barnsley and Coventry City last season. Coventry would love to sign him permanently, but money is tight at the Sky Blues so he's likely to end up somewhere else in the second tier. James has reportedly opened negotiations at Bristol City who are managed by one of his former Leicester bosses, Nigel Pearson. The playmaker has been described as a 'manager's dream' by Coventry boss Mark Robins and is sure to have numerous suitors. Photo: Getty Images.
