Toney’s 39 goals in 63 Football League starts starts works out as a goal every 1.61 games for the club.
The Peterborough Telegraph looked at all the club’s strikers who have scored 20 or more Football League goals for the club to work out the hottest Posh shots.
We used starting appearances and goals scored in Football League matches only and calculated a games-per-goal ratio.
Star names from successful Posh teams like Ken Charlery and Tony Adcock didn’t even make the top 20. Others who were considered weaker all-round forwards did make the list.
Dwight Gayle, widely recognised as one of the top strikers in the club’s history, didn’t qualify as he ‘only’ scored 13 goals in his 27 appearances at a goal every 2.07 games which would have placed him 12th in our list.
Toney’s lofty ranking would come as no surprise to Posh manager Darren Ferguson who rates the 24 year-old highly. Ferguson said: “I’m lucky enough to have managed some outstanding strikers at this club and Ivan is as good as any of them. He’s more than just a goalscorer as his physicality and quality helps create goals for others.
“Ivan is also a terrific defender at set-pieces. One of the best I’ve managed.”
Club record signing Mo Eisa has 14 goals in 27 Posh starts (a goal every 1.93 starts).
The top 20 in reverse order are...
1.
20th RAY SMITH. Posh years: 1960-62. Posh starts: 92. Posh goals: 33. GPG ratio: 2.79. Smith is regarded as one of the unsung heroes of the all-conquering 1960-61 Fourth Division title-winning Posh side. He ‘only’ scored 17 goals that season, less than a third of Terry Bly’s total! But Smith’s speed and skill made him an integral part of the most prolific front five to ever play for Posh. Smith eventually moved to Northampton in 1962.
2.
19th. CALLUM WILLOCK. Posh years: 2003-06. Posh starts: 60. Posh goals: 23. GPG ratio: 2.60. A surprising entry in this particular Posh top 20, as Willock often appeared to flatter to deceive after a £25k transfer from Fulham. He was quick, but he wasn’t a fan of physical lower division defenders. His overall record wasn’t bad though and he went on to play for five other Football League clubs before drifting into non-league.
3.
18th SEAN FARRELL. Posh years: 1994-97. Posh starts: 49. Posh goals: 20. GPG ratio: 2.45. Well who would have though this centre-forward’s goals-per-game record for Posh was better than 92 Wembley heroes Tony Adcock (a goal every 3.06 starts) and Ken Charlery (a goal every 3.09 starts)? Honest endeavour was what you got from Farrell following a £120k move from Fulham. Injuries and the arrival of Barry Fry ended his Posh career. Photo: Midlands
4.
17th. JIM HALL. Posh years: 1967-75. Posh starts: 298. Posh goals: 122. GPG ratio: 2.44. The club’s all-time record goalscorer amassed his 122 Football League goals (139 goals in all competitions) over an eight year period. He was an old-fashioned battering ram of a centre forward who played a key role in Posh’s Fourth Division title win under Noel Cantwell in 1973-74. His best goalscoring season was 24 in the 1969-70 campaign.
