Watford boss has already put a humbling defeat at the hands of Peterborough United to the back of his mind

Watford boss Alessio Dionisi has already forgotten about his side’s 5-1 humbling at the hands of Peterborough United in a second round Carabao Cup tie at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night.

There were some mitigating circumstances for ‘The Hornets’ who fielded their youngest side for 14 years with an average age of just under 22. Six of their starting line-up were making their full debuts. Dionisi made his selection decision to give his side the best chance to prepare for the visit of West Ham United for a Championship fixture on Saturday.

But Posh also made six changes to the team that started the weekend win over Mansfield Town, and yet they still produced a performance of real quality as Harry Leonard (2), Harrison Jones and Bolu Shofowoke added to an early own goal.

“It was important that we used today to prepare for the next match against West Ham,” Dionisi said. “We did not play well, but it was an opportunity for six Academy players and for me these players played at their maximum.

“Let’s stay together now. In this moment it’s clear we are not ready for two competitions.

“We say sorry to the supporters for this result, but tomorrow we will not think about this game any more.”
