That got us thinking about Posh signings who exceeded expectations to become hits at London Road. Here are many such players with nominations from Posh fans on social media and from PT Posh writer Alan Swann.
Tomorrow (January 3) we’ll cover the players we thought would be good signings, but turned out to be big disappointments.
No current Posh players have been included apart from one from a previous spell at London Road.

13. MARTIN PIKE
Pike was a midfielder when he followed Posh boss John Wile from West Bromwich Albion in 1983. He turned into an excellent left-back who also famously played in goal for the final 10 minutes of a thrilling FA Cup win over Leeds United at London Road. Player of the season for Posh in the 1984-85 campaign which included a run to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

14. JIMMY QUINN
Okay Quinn had enjoyed a decorated career involving top-flight football and international caps and goals for Northern Ireland when he joined Posh in July, 1977. But he was 37 when Barry Fry signed him. Yet he was still class and he scored 25 goals (20 in the league) in his one full season at the club. A great bloke as well.

15. RUSSELL MARTIN
Martin moved to Posh from Wycombe in July 2008 as the makeweight in a deal that also delivered exciting winger Sergio Torres to London Road. But Martin was the one who excelled turning in a series of polished displays at right-back as Posh sealed those back-to-back promotions and a place in the Championship for the first time in 15 years.

16. ALAN PARIS
This dashing right-back was a free transfer recruit from Watford in August 1985 and is always mentioned when Posh fans discuss the best player in that position in the club's history. Player-of-the-season in his first season at the club and made the PFA Fourth Division Team of the Year the following season.
