That got us thinking about Posh signings who exceeded expectations to become hits at London Road. Here are many such players with nominations from Posh fans on social media and from PT Posh writer Alan Swann.
Tomorrow (January 3) we’ll cover the players we thought would be good signings, but turned out to be big disappointments.
No current Posh players have been included apart from one from a previous spell at London Road.

9. MICK HALSALL
Halsall had a reputation as a hard-working, but limited, lower league player when money raised by 'Cantwell's Crusade' - a manager-inspired fund raiser aimed at the fans - delivered him to London Road from Grimsby in 1987. Soon appointed captain, Halsall's career and form took off when Chris Turner arrived as Posh boss in 1991. He skippered Posh to back-to-back promotions and is now recognised as the best club captain of all-time as well one of the top midfielders of his kind.

10. JACK MARRIOTT (2017)
Eyebrows were raised in the summer of 2017 when League One Posh paid £400k for a forward who hadn't been able to get into the League Two side of Luton Town the previous season. It seemed a remarkable gamble, but boy did it pay off as Marriott bagged 33 goals to earn a £4 million move (and a 10-fold profit for Posh) to Derby at the end of the season.

11. STEVE WELSH
This former soldier had made just one substitute appearance for Cambridge United when Chris Turner signed him on a free transfer. Turner knew a thing or two about centre-back play and Welsh was outstanding in the 1991-92 promotion-winning team from the old Division Three and in the Championship the following season.

12. MARCUS EBDON
This Welsh under 21 midfielder was another masterful signing by Turner. Ebdon hadn't made a Football League appearance before joining Posh from Everton and, after providing THAT pass to enable Ken Charlery to win the Wembley play-off final later that season he was etched into Posh folklore.
