Ferguson, the son of legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has obvious links to Salford who are part-owned by Old Trafford stars Sir David Beckham and Gary Neville. Ferguson junior is a former United player.

Ferguson has won promotion twice from League Two with Posh in 2007-08 and with Doncaster Rovers in 2016-17. His fourth-spell at Posh ended with the sack after a home defeat to Blackpool last October. Ferguson was linked with the vacant Leicester City job earlier in the summer.

Salford have spent the last 7 seasons in League Two. They have had 5 managers in that time. Robinson, Gary Bowyer, Neil Wood, Graham Alexander and Richie Wellens.
