The best and the worst Peterborough United moments in matches against MK Dons
MK Dons have only been in existence for just over 20 years, but a fierce rivalry with Peterborough United developed quickly.
The two clubs are only 50 miles apart and they first met in a League Cup tie at Posh in August, 2005, just a year after Wimbledon FC were relocated to Buckinghamshire and renamed to become MK Dons, or Franchise FC in the eyes of many disapproving fans.

MK won that first meeting 3-0 with second-half goals from Izale Mcleod, Allan Smart and Malvin Kamara in front of under 3,000 fans. Posh gained revenge with a 2-0 win in FA Cup tie at the National Hockey Stadium – the home of MK before their current plush and far too big stadium was built – later that season. Richard Logan and Mark Arber scored for Posh.
The teams were also League One rivals that season with Posh drawing 1-1 in MK courtesy of a rare goal from Leon Constantine, but the visitors again triumphed 3-0 at London Road towards the end of a campaign which saw Barry Fry’s team relegated.

By the time the teams met again Darragh MacAnthony had arrived at Posh and his team did the double over MK (2-0 away, 4-0 at home) in League Two and the following season both were promoted the division. MK won the title with Posh finishing second. Chris Whelpdale scored the Posh goal in a 1-1 draw at Stadium MK, but a 2-1 away win at London Road earlier in the season had proved vital in the race for the title.
Posh gained revenge the following season when they won automatic promotion from League One as MK missed out on their back-to-back promotion bid in the play-offs.
Posh were relegated the following leading to the most dramatic, and famous, meetings with MK as both teams again battled for promotion from League One.
In the regular season Posh won 2-1 at home (Craig Mackail-Smith, Aaron Mclean), but lost 1-0 at Stadium MK.

Posh finished fourth after Darren Ferguson’s dramatic return to manage the club, while MK finished fifth, two points back so a never-to-be-forgotten play-off semi-final was set.
Posh scored first in the first leg through Mackail-Smith, but the hosts scored three times in 10 second-half minutes to take control. Their grip only tightened when Posh full-back Charlie Lee was sent-off on 67 minutes, but a shocking piece of refereeing gave Ferguson’s side a lifeline.
Posh right-back Mark Little was fouled by Stephen Gleeson outside the penalty area, but referee Jonathan Moss gave a penalty and showed Gleeson a red card, one which was overturned before the second leg.
Grant McCann converted the spot-kick and scored direct from a free-kick in the second leg which Posh won 2-0 roared on by some fanatical home support. Mackail-Smith also scored again and both players then netted in a 3-0 play-off final win against Huddersfield at Old Trafford.
That was a Posh highlight in games against MK, the lowlight was playing against nine men for an hour at Stadium MK and yet losing 1-0 in a League One game in December, 2017.
Referee Charles Breakspear sent two home players off in the first 35 minutes, but they scored with 10 men and then resisted with nine.
Posh won 3-0 on their last trip to Stadium MK in a League One game in October, 2022. Jonson Clarke-Harris, Kwame Poku and Ricky-Jade Jones had Posh 3-0 up in 57 minutes before the hosts scored twice in added time.
Posh have won 13 and lost 9 of 27 regular season Football League matches against MK.
