We have weighed up the pros and cons of possible contenders...

KARL ROBINSON

Pros: He’s available. His sides try and play good football. He enjoys a strong relationship with Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony. He’s reached the League One play-offs three times with MK Dons and Oxford United.

Cons: He’s available because he failed to get Salford out of League Two. He’s never won the League One play-offs and he hasn’t won a promotion since his sole success in the 2014-15 season, although it was from League One. Posh fans didn’t like him when he was MK Dons boss.

DAVE CHALLINOR

Pros: A strong body of work with Stockport County including two league titles, plus five promotions with Colwyn Bay, AFC Fylde and Hartlepool. Reached the League One play-off final with County last season.

Cons: He can afford to wait for a better job than the one at Posh. His record demands a top League One club at worst. One reason he apparently left County was a change in the level of financial support and he might find working with a hands-on chairman like MacAnthony unsettling.

ROBBIE SAVAGE Pros: A strong personality who would bring attention to Posh. Reportedly a good man-manager capable of getting the best out of young players of which Posh have plenty, especially midfielders which is a Savage strength. Knows League One pretty well as his son plays for Reading. He prefers high-tempo football to passing the ball about for the sake of it.

Cons: A likely personality clash with MacAnthony as both are spikey characters. He has so far failed at Forest Green Rovers who are mid-table in the National League after a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Boston yesterday.

DEAN BRENNAN

Pros: He’s known for his passion, which would make a pleasant change. He’s an emerging boss who has taken Barnet into the Football League and now steered them to the top of League Two. His team are relentless pressers and Posh have a young and fit squad.

Cons: No experience of League One. Barnet are a team of far lower expectations than Posh so he might not want to leave his comfort zone to manage a team who might swap places with ‘The Bees’ next season anyway.

ANDY EDWARDS Pros: A former Posh promotion-winning skipper so he knows the club. He has a great reputation as a coach with England age group teams, so used to working with young players, and now with Notts County.

Cons: Only a very brief spell as a manager. He’s a pretty laid-back character so the stress of management might not be for him.

MATT BLOOMFIELD

Pros: He steered Wycombe to the top of League One before departing for Luton. He felt hard done by when losing his jobs at Luton and at Oxford United so he would be hungry to prove the doubters wrong. He’s a highly regarded coach who would enjoy working with young players with great potential, in what has become a high profile position.

Cons: The average shelf life of managers who work for MacAnthony won’t appeal to a man reportedly looking for a project as well as a job.

MICHAEL DUFF

Pros: Unlucky not to take Barnsley into the Championship. Took Wycombe on when they were struggling badly last season and led them safely into mid-table which Posh would settle for right now. He is adept an organising a defence which Posh need right now.

Cons: Struggled with the greater expectations when managing at Swansea and Huddersfield Town and, no matter how unrealistic, the chairman’s expectations don’t seem to change. Duff is a pragmatist rather than a dreamer which might count against him.
