Peterborough United's tumbleweed transfer window ended with a damp squib of a deadline day, but there was still some very good news
The tumbleweed transfer window at Peterborough United ended with a damp squib of a deadline day.
The only signing announcement was of a player on a short-term deal who was here anyway and who struggled badly until he was injured. It might have been better to just say nothing as Jacob Mendy already had a loan deal to the end of the season, although I understand Wrexham wanted to make the move public so they could honour one of their former promotion winners.
Fans love signings, but to be fair to Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony and manager Luke Williams they’ve been consistent with their messaging. No players would be signed for the sake of it. They were happy to wait for long-term targets to become available. The chairman’s past record of trickery with transfer announcements meant many still expected someone, anyone, to arrive. One did, sort of, but one that didn’t move the excitement dial an inch.
Posh arrived at deadline day in League One no-man’s-land. Saturday’s defeat to Huddersfield makes a play-off finish unlikely and, even with a recruitment hiatus, the squad should be good enough to maintain their current mid-table position. It made little practical sense to splash the cash, just as it was completely logical for those in the thick of the promotion race or stuck in the relegation battle to call for reinforcements.

If I was a Lincoln City fan I’d be concerned with the quality of signings made by Stockport County, Bolton Wanderers and even Huddersfield Town in the latest transfer window.
Williams won’t want any injuries now though. What last Saturday told us is certain players are irreplaceable. Archie Collins is one of them and happily he remains at the club until June, unless some MacAnthony magic, and a hefty pay rise, persuades him to sign a new deal. Unlikely, but you never know. For me keeping Collins was the best possible Posh news on deadline day.
I agree with the sentiments re keeping a route to the first-team available to Academy graduates, our own not those who have been brought up at Premier League clubs, but who are blocked from going any further.
Posh also appear to have reduced the wage bill which can only help future trading plans. Goalkeepers Nicholas Bilokapic and Will Blackmore have been paid up and departed, but without a club to go which is a disappointment for two decent blokes.
Centre-back Tom O’Connor will be missed though and I suspect Wrexham taking him back early because of serious injury was a factor in Posh agreeing to keep hold of Mendy.
