Peterborough United were rebuffed after offering a contract to an international midfielder with vast experience

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed Peterborough United tried to sign free agent midfielder Sam Morsy.

Persuading the 34 year-old Egypt international to drop into League One would have been seen a coup for Posh, but the former Ipswich skipper turned down the offer of a two-year deal. Morsy left Bristol City at the end of last season and has yet to find another club. He has now joined the PFA free agents group of players seeking their next destination.

MacAnthony made his revelation while chatting to fans on social media site X on Tuesday evening. He posted: “Offered him via his agent a good 2 year deal 6 weeks ago. Was a firm ‘no’. That’s football. I can only try.”

Posh are keen to find a replacement midfielder for Archie Collins who ran his contract down at London Road. Morsy has played over 600 competitive senior games having also represented Middlesbrough, Wigan Athletic, Port Vale, Chesterfield and Barnsley.
