We issued one ‘A’ grade and five ‘B’ grades, but most have struggled to get a satisfactory rating.
We haven’t marked forwards Jack Marriott, Joel Randall and Ricky-Jade Jones as their seasons have been ruined by serious injury, although the former would definitely be in the ‘can do better’ camp judged on his few displays so far.
Manager Darren Ferguson would be another hovering between a C and a D grade, although he hasn’t been helped by the departure of coach Mark Robson.
Grading key: A=Outstanding, B=Good, C:Satisfactory, D+Can do better; E=Terrible: F=Failure.

9. D Minus SAMMIE SZMODICS
Championship starts/goals: 13/2. Missed games early in the season after becoming a father for the first time and he’s never really got going. Even scoring twice against his former club Bristol City didn’t spark him into life and the step up is too great for a forward player who has yet to match his excellent workrate and attitude with enough quality and technical ability on the ball. One of the season’s big disappointments so far.
Championship starts/goals: 15/0. It’s been a disappointing campaign so far for a wide player who appears to have enough pace and quality to thrive at Championship level. But he has only shown it in glimpses so far as a reluctance to use his gifts holds him back. Ward is often too negative in possession and the chances of the longest-serving senior pOSH player having an impact have been lessened by the switch to a midfield diamond.
Championship starts/goals: 16/1. Another to have taken time to find his feet at a new club, but the recent switch to a midfield diamond should help a creative talent with an eye for a goal. He’s not the quickest, but he can see a defence-splitting pass and not many of this squad can say that. His goal against Birmingham City was very classy and he needs to take control of set-pieces close to the opposition penalty area.
Championship starts/goals: 10/0. It took the summer signing from Leicester City a while to settle down, but he’s been one of the better Posh players in recent matches. He’s currently occupying a central defensive position in a flat back four, but that doesn’t stop him making attacking runs which offer promise in a side that has lacked quality going forward. His pass for Dembele’s goal at Blackpool was the ‘ball of the season’ so far.
