And now and again heroism comes from an unlikely source like the Posh players featured here.
Suggestions mostly from Posh fans on Twitter to @PTAlanSwann
9. MARTIN PIKE
Pike was a decent left-back in a pretty ordinary Posh team of the 1980s managed by John Wile, but somehow that side reached the fifth round of the FA Cup in the 1985-86 season. Greig Shepherd's goal midway through the second-half gave Fourth Division Posh a lead over Second Division Leeds in the third round at London Road, but the striker's heroics were overshadowed in a mad finale which saw Pike play the final 20 minutes in goal after an injury to number one John Turner. He made a couple of saves in the snow to earn cult-like status from the grateful home crowd.
10. CHARLIE LEE
High levels of commitment, plenty of quality and an ability to play well in a number of positions endeared Lee to the Posh faithful. He wasn't a superstar in the back-to-back promotion wins of 2007-08 and 2008-09, but he delivered vital moments in two big games in the latter season. He headed the only goal of the game for 10-man Posh to beat local rivals Northampton Town (he's pictured celebrating) and then scored the goal at Colchester that sealed a stunning promotion for an outstanding side.
11. JAMES WESOLOWSKI
There were many more gifted players in Darren Ferguson's 2011 promotion-winning side tham midfielder James Wesolowski. He didn't score or create goals, but he will always be remembered for his part in a thrilling League One play-off semi-final (second leg) win over MK Dons at London Road. Posh had overturned a 3-2 first leg deficit to lead on aggregate when Wesolowski made a superb last-ditch tackle to prevent a visiting player scoring. The greatest London Road atmosphere in recent memory roared their approval, and still do whenever that game is recalled. Photo: Peterborough Evening Telegraph
