Peterborough United manager is seeking new players in the January transfer window, but he won't be complaining if he doesn't get any

Manager Luke Williams insists he would not fear for Peterborough United’s immediate future if no new signings arrive in the January transfer window.

Williams has confirmed Posh are looking at potential new recruits, but other factors are in play, namely a bloated first-team squad and staying within the limits of EFL rules on spending.

Since the winter window opened on January 1 Posh have let midfielder Ryan De Havilland join League Two strugglers Bristol Rovers, while on-loan goalkeeper VIcente Reyes has returned to parent club Norwich City. Forward Chris Conn-Clarke has seen his loan at National League Carlisle United extended to the end of the season and attacking player Klaidi Lolos could also be gone soon, possibly to a former club Crawley Town.

"We are looking at players,” Williams said. “We have good ideas on players who would fit into, and improve, our current squad, but we do need to be careful. The squad is very heavy in numbers right now and there are financial implications to consider.

"We don’t want players here who are too disengaged so I can see players moving on. To be fair we have players who haven’t been playing who would rather play than just sit around and get paid for training which is lovely to see. There isn’t a weak player among them.

"I was pleased for Ryan finding a club. He is a fantastic footballer which you can see by the way he strikes a ball and manipulates it in training. He’s trained well since I’ve been here and Bristol Rovers have signed a really good player.

"If some players end up staying then so be it. Weird and wonderful things can happen in football so you never know.

"And if we don’t bring in any new players then there will no complaints from me. There is no fear from me regarding the current group as they have been in promotion form.”

Goalkeepers Nicholas Bilokapic and Will Blackmore have been on the transfer list since the summer. Winger Abraham Odoh is also thought to be available after losing his place in the first team squad.

Posh have picked up 22 points in 11 League One matches since Williams became manager at the end of October.
