Peterborough United first-team clues after under 21 squad announcement, plus FA Youth Cup draw

The chances of experienced centre-back Sam Hughes returning to first team action for Peterborough United on Saturday have increased.

Hughes, who hasn’t played for the first team since May 2025, was scheduled to play for Posh Under 21s in a Premier League Cup tie at Newcastle United in Friday evening, but was not in the squad. Hughes had played for 30 minutes and then 45 minutes in the two previous Under 21 games.

Transfer listed forward Chris Conn-Clarke, who scored five goals for the under 21s on Tuesday, was also not involved in the North East so could also be in an injury ravaged matchday squad to face Luton Town in a League One match at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Among the senior players battling to be fit tomorrow are Harry Leonard, Brandon Khela, Josh Feeney, Harry Ashfield, David Okagbue and Owura Edwards.

The under 21s named a very young squad to tackle Newcastle, but it did include summer signing from Sunderland Harrison Jones.

Posh Under 21s: Smith, Bushell, Joseph, Freeman, Arber, Christoudias, Fox, HM Jones, McWilliams-Marcano, Simmons. Subs Claxton, Elsom, Ndonjan, H Jones, Dagne, Mlityalwa.

Posh are at Mansfield Town in the first round of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday (November 4). The winners travel to Wigan Athletic in the second round.
