But that’s not always been the case as National World writer Sam Cox found out, using industry and official club websites.
Posh are well represented in the top 20 most expensive transfer fees ever paid by League One clubs.
And one non-Posh player appears twice in the list!

9. 12th WILL GRIGG £900k
Feom Brentford to Wigan, 2015. Striker Grigg was excellent in his one season at MK Dons which led to a move to Brentford which was less impressive. Griggs recaptured his form for Wigan well enough (65 goals, 115 starts) for Sunderland to splash out a ludicrous £4 million for him in January, 2019. It hasn't worked out on Wearside and he spent last season on loan at Rotherham without making much of an impact. Photo: Nathan Stirk/Getty Images

10. 11th Sammie Szmodics £990k
From Bristol City to Posh, 2020. This busy attacking player was outstanding on loan at Posh in the aborted 2019-20 season and his near-million pound move that summer proved good value as the 26 year-old scored freely in a League One promotion campaign. He struggled last season in the Championship, but goals can be expected again in the third tier next season. Photo: Joe Dent

11. 10th JONSON CLARKE-HARRIS £1 million
From Bristol Rovers to Posh, 2020. A superb 33 goals in his first season for Posh and top-scored last season with 12 in a struggling side. Posh have already had good value from their expensive striker and he's tipped to score plenty again in 2022-23. Photo: Joe Dent

12. 9th DANNY WARD £1 million
From Bolton to Huddersfield, 2011. Striker Ward first moved to Huddersfield for big money a decade ago. After spells at Rotherham and Cardiff he returned to the Terriers on a free transfer In August 2020 and was a star in last season's third-placed finish in the Championship with 14 goals.
