But that’s not always been the case as National World writer Sam Cox found out, using industry and official club websites.
Posh are well represented in the top 20 most expensive transfer fees ever paid by League One clubs.
And one non-Posh player appears twice in the list!

17. 4th BRITT ASSOMBALONGA £1.25 million
From Watford to Posh, July 2013. This explosive striker was signed to replace Dwight Gayle and he was brilliant scoring 33 goals in his one season at the club before the inevitable £5.5 million transfer to Nottingham Forest 12 months later. Subsequently moved for £15 million to Middlesbrough, but left the Riverside on a free for Turkish football with top-flight side Adana Demirspor before the start of last season. 18. 3rd MO EISA £1.3 million
From Cheltenham to Posh, 2019. A striker who usurped Assombalonga as Posh's record signing, but after a bright start he couldn't break into the side ahead of some talented forwards led by Ivan Toney. Left after 21 goals in two seasons to play a big part in MK Dons' run to last season's League One play-off semi-final. Photo: Joe Dent

19. 2nd JOHN BRAYFORD £2 million
From Cardiff to Sheffield UInited, 2015. A consistent full-back who didn't quite reach 50 appearances for the Blades after making a loan move permanent. He's been a steady performer for League One Burton Albion for the last six years, racking up over 200 appearances for the Brewers. Photo: Tony Marshall/Getty Images

20. 1st WILL GRIGG £4 million
From Wigan to Sunderland, 2019. A famous deadline day transfer as some negotiations were filmed live in a Netflix documentary on Sunderland FC. It turned out to be a terrible deal, costing the club £500k a goal, so far. Photo: Lewis Storey/Getty Images
