But that’s not always been the case as National World writer Sam Cox found out, using industry and official club websites.
Posh are well represented in the top 20 most expensive transfer fees ever paid by League One clubs.
And one non-Posh player appears twice in the list!

5. 16th KIERAN AGARD £750k
From Rotherham to Bristol City, 2014. A one-time (and one-game) Posh loanee from Everton this striker went on to enjoy a terrific spell at MK Dons. Now 32 and played for Doncaster Rovers last season. Photo: BEN STANSALL/AFP via Getty Images

6. 15th MATT TUBBS £800k
From Crawley to AFC Bournemouth, 2012. Posh were reportedly interested in a prolific non league goalscorer, but he made a big money move to Bournemouth. He found the Football League a challenge though and, after several free transfer and loan moves, he was back in non-league football by 2016 and played for Bashley last season. 7. 14th NICKY AJOSE £800k
From Swindon to Charlton, 2016. We all thought Posh transfer guru Barry Fry had worked wonders to get £300k for this former Manchester United forward when he moved from London Road to Leeds United in 2014. But his improvement after leaving Posh was such his value almost trebled in two years although he didn't make much of an impression at the Valley. Stopped playing at the age of 29 after a season at Exeter City and is now on that club's Academy coaching staff. Photo: Ker Robertson/Getty Images

8. 13th: JOSE FONTE
From Crystal Palace to Southampton 2010. The Saints pipped Posh to an automatic promotion place in the 2010-11 season because they could afford stars like this Portuguese centre-back. Moved from Southampton to West Ham for £8 million and then onto Chinese football for another £5 million. Ended up in French football with Lille. Still playing aged 38 after helping Lille to the 2020-21 Ligue Un title and earned his 50th cap for Portugal in a World Cup qualifying play-off match earlier this year.
