Peterborough United boss says success can be achieved without Ivan Toney because ‘no club replaces strikers better than we do’

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson is adamant his side can succeed in the 2020-21 season despite the loss of star man Ivan Toney to Brentford in a deal that could be worth £10 million to the club.

Ferguson acknowledged the superhuman efforts of his 26-goal striker last term, but was also at pains to point out the club’s impressive striker recruitment record in recent seasons.

Toney himself was a replacement for 33-goal Jack Marriott and Jonson Clarke-Harris has already arrived at Posh to replace Toney.

“No-one replaces strikers better than we do,” Ferguson stated. “We sign good ones and replace them with good ones.

“And in terms of getting the right price for them there is no one better than us and I am very fortunate to have owners happy to re-invest transfer fees into the playing squad.

“It would be better if these top players helped us to have success, but Ivan could hardly have done any more to get us up last season. He was absolutely outstanding.”

Toney’s fee will remain undisclosed, but Posh insist they have received a good price for a 24 year-old player who was about to enter the last year of his contract.
