Peterborough United boss on the club's new 'action man' and four key injury updates ahead of Sheffield Wednesday visit

First-team manager Luke Williams has told Peterborough United fans what they can expect from new man Harry Ashfield.

The 20-year-old midfielder signed in the closing minutes of Deadline Day on Tuesday and, while Posh were just about to kick-off against Stevenage, there was a flurry of activity behind the scenes to enable the deal to be completed in time.

Ashfield is contention to make his debut for the club on Saturday as Posh host one of the promotion favourites Sheffield Wednesday (12.30pm kick off).

Williams has told Posh fans they can expect an ‘action man’ in the midfield and well as expressing his delight at the squad that has been assembled following the club’s 11 summer signings.

Williams said: “I’m very pleased to get Harry. We now have good competition, good quality and the right type of people. He’s another player who has come here hungry and committed. It was his choice. There are times players move as a last resort or there is only club willing to pay and you worry if he wants to be here, but that’s not the case with any of the players here. They have come here because it is where they want to play their football. They are ready to compete and be positive.

“Harris is another action man, a proper midfielder who can attack as much as he defends, and play in different roles. Having the ability to move the midfielders we have around into different roles gives us so many more options.

“I’m very pleased with the squad we have. A huge thank you to Darragh MacAnthony and Barry Fry for their incredible energy, time and money invested.

“Darragh was excellent in the way he shielded myself and the matchday staff from everything on deadline day, but it was an incredible juggling act because he needed to make the medical team aware.”

Posh expect to have Owura Edwards back in contention against Sheffield Wednesday despite limping out of the first half on Tuesday night and appearing to hold his hamstring.

Williams said: “Owura will be the first to say he has had injury issues and now he’s learning to read early signs. I’m really happy he did that and we don’t see anything really there after a proper examination. He did the right thing.”

Tom O’Connor, Carl Johnston and Vernon Masara also missed the match carrying knocks but according to Williams, only O'Connor is likely to be in contention for Saturday’s match.

He added: “Tom has done incredibly to get back on the pitch and put in the minutes he has but there’s going to be some compromise with that. We have to be careful but there is nothing to be really concerned about.

"CJ caught the floor and jarred something so he’ll be out a big longer.

"Vernon is progressing well, but he took an incredible clash and the force shocked him and he’s still feeling discomfort.”
