Peterborough United boss on changing a winning team and on earning an even bigger, more exciting tie by beating Watford

Peterborough United boss Luke Williams would have no qualms about changing a winning side for Tuesday night’s second round Carabao Cup tie at Championship side Watford.

Williams is confident changes would not alter the team’s dynamism, a trait that was seen to good effect in the second-half of last Saturday’s 2-1 League One home win against Mansfield Town.

Centre-back Tom O’Connor is one who could be rested as Posh are still wary of over-playing a man recently returned from a serious hamstring injury. O’Connor played 90 minutes for the first time since January on Saturday.

Irish under 21 international central defender David Okagbue is available after missing the Mansfield match because of suspension. Summer midfield signing Harrison Jones is another who could get a start after coming off the substitutes’ bench for the final stages of Saturday’s win.

Williams said: “We could change players and I am sure they would bring the same energy and quality. We need to get to the point where we can trust them all.

"In Tom O’Connor’s case there is more to come as far as match conditioning is concerned, but he looked like he finished the game as well as he started it on Saturday. He says he feels great and we have to trust him.

"We will take all the cup competitions seriously. I’ve been to Watford a couple of times as a Championship manager and the surface there is spectacular. The club have also done a great job in giving the stadium a really modern feel.

"They are a strong side who play in a very tough division. They are super organised defensively with good structure and discipline. They are more likely to change their front players against us, but they will all have flair, pace and quality.

"It’s a great fixture for us, but all the talk yesterday was of winning again and getting an even bigger, more exciting fixture in the next round.”
