Brentford have been long-time admirers of the 24 year-old who scored 26 goals in a shortened 2019-20 season.

The Bees pursued Toney relentlessly throughout January, but Posh refused to sell believing he would score the goals to take them up from League One last season.

Posh admitted they agreed a fee with an unnamed club two weeks ago. That club was understood to be Brentford.

The arrival of Jonson Clarke-Harris from Bristol Rovers today suggested Toney’s departure was imminent. Clarke-Harris is seen as Toney’s natural replacement.

Toney cost Posh a reported £350k when he moved from Newcastle United in August 2018. That now represents a huge profit of £9.65 million, although The Magipes are due a considerable sell-on fee.

Toney scored 49 goals in 94 appearances (13 as a sub) for Posh.

Posh transfer spokesman Darragh MacAnthony decline to comment on the latest report, but Toney trained with Posh today.

TalkSPORT ran a similar story earlier this month, but said Brentford had agreed a fee of £6.5 million with add ons on top.
