Owner Darragh MacAnthony will put his club shares up for sale if Peterborough United fail under Robbie Savage

Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony claims he will sell his shares in the club if they don’t reach the top 10 in League One by February.

MacAnthony took to social media site X in a bid to defend the club’s squad after they were beaten 2-0 at Bradford City in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Tuesday. He also backed Robbie Savage to be the manager to drive the club upwards.

MacAnthony was tagged in a tweet which described the match as ‘boys against men’ and in response MacAnthony once again confirmed his belief in the squad and told fans he would sell his shares if the club did not reach the top 10 in League One early next year. Posh currently sit 21st with 10 points from 12 matches.

The original tweet stated: “Boys against men, not Robbie’s fault. It's down to @dmac102 and his young and hungry idea that just won't work at this level.”

In response, MacAnthony said: “Yep that idea (which we’ve had for 20 seasons) just won’t work at this level as it never has right?

“But being serious for a moment; I take full responsibility for all the squads built over my 20 years owning Posh.

“For some reason I have a lot of confidence in the current one. Robbie Savage will bring the best out of them and we as owners will support him in doing so.

“My promise to you the fans is always honesty, so I make a promise that if this squad isn’t top 10 by February, I’ll put my share of the club up for sale and let others take on the baton with our wonderful club.”

Posh have won four promotions in the MacAnthony era, three of them from League One to the Championship
