New Peterborough United signing promises to get fans off their seats

New signing Harry Ashfield has promised to get Peterborough United fans out of their seats.

The 20 year-old midfielder was a late deadline day signing for Posh who agreed an undisclosed fee with Wrexham for his services. Ashfield is a lifelong Wrexham fan who came through the club’s youth ranks before making his senior club debut aged 17 in 2023. He’s signed a three year contract at Posh.

Chances had become few and far between for Ashfield as Wrexham moved through the Football League divisions. He made just one Championship appearance for the club as an 87th minute substitute in a 2-0 win at Blackburn last January before he was sent on loan to League Two side Cheltenham for the rest of the season.

Ashfield also made five Wrexham starts in cup competitions and scored one of his two first team goals in a 3-2 Carabao Cup win at Preston last season.

Regular football is now his aim and he can’t wait to get started at Posh. His role model is Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and his uncle is former Wrexham and Spurs striker Chris Armstrong.

"I like to think I’m an exciting player who will gers fans off their seats,” Ashfield told the Posh Plus service. “I like to be on the ball, but I also l i ke the defensive side of the job. Steven Gerrard was the player I looked up the most, although I have a fair way to go to get to his standard.

"I’m buzzing to be at Peterborough as I love the style of player the manager wants to employ and they have a great record of developing younger players.

"It helped me massively going out on loan to Cheltenham. Playing men’s football is what I needed and they helped me a lot and made me a much better player.

“I spoke to some players before I came down and they all gave a good word about Peterborough. I spoke to Jack Marriott and I already knew Tom O’Connor and George Nevett so that helped as well.

"The aim now is to play as many games as possible and to contribute to us winning games and climbing up the table. It was a crazy 24 hours leading up to the move, but now I just want to get on the pitch and show everyone what I can do.”

Ashfield made 17 appearances for Cheltenham (nine starts) and scored twice.

Nevett left the club yesterday to join League Two side Tranmere Rovers on a season-long loan. Striker David Kamara made the same move, while forward Klaidi Lolos moved to Rotherham United, also of League Two and also on a season-long loan.
