New Peterborough United signing chose a challenge over a payday

Colchester United manager Danny Cowley has revealed winger Owura Edwards turned down bigger salary offers in favour of joining Peterborough United.

The 25 year-old winger fell out of contract at Colchester at the end of last season which meant he could leave the JobServe Community Stadium on a free transfer.

That made Edwards an attractive proposition to many clubs prepared to gamble on an as yet unfulfilled talent. Posh were one of those clubs, but they didn’t make the biggest financial offer to the player according to Cowley.

Cowley also admitted his team would miss Owura even though he used him sparingly as a first-team starter in League Two last season.

Cowley told the Colchester Gazette: “Credit to Owura, because he was offered bigger numbers and bigger salaries in League Two, but he took the option to go to Peterborough in League One and really try to challenge himself in that division.

“He has some wonderful attributes, athleticism and pace – we’ll miss them, for sure.”

Owura is one of five new signings made by Posh this summer. Goalkeeper Collin Andeng-Ndi, defenders Evan Weir and Tom O’Connor and midfielder Harrison Jones have also arrived at London Road.

Wingers Cian Hayes and Abraham Odoh left Posh this week to make room for Edwards and one other targeted winger.
