Portsmouth’s former assistant manager, Joe Gallen, has stepped up to lead the side tonight for the first time following Kenny Jackett’s sacking on Sunday.

Posh are looking for their first win in three League One matches and beat a second-string Portsmouth side 5-1 at the Weston Homes Stadium in the EFL Trophy in January.

In the league, however, Posh went down 2-0 at Fratton Park thanks to goals from defenders Jack Whatmough and Tom Naylor.

LIVE BLOG: Posh vs Portsmouth

  • 1-0 FT
  • Posh take the lead through bizarre own goal after Burrows wicked ball in
  • Game of few chances
  • Pompey came into the game second half but were restricted to long range efforts
  • Szmodics out injured, rated as 40% for Rochdale on Saturday
  • Posh stay second, three behind Hull with two games in hand.

Posh secure second for another week.

Posh will stay second well set behind Hull after that edgy win. They would have been surprised with the lack of intent from Portsmouth in the early stages but by the same token, were unable to break them down. A magic ball from Burrows and a goalkeeping error did the trick and forced Pompey out. They battered the Posh box with crosses in and Posh were able to hold out.

A handy win too given Ipswich, Lincoln and Doncaster all lost.

Posh win!

Scrappy but Posh won’t mind, boots flying in everywhere from Posh players, Ward, Eisa and Brown all put their bodies on the line.

Blake-Tracy holds the ball up well in the corner, he clearly wins a throw-in but the ref gives a goal-kick. Portsmouth build an attack from that and it looks as if they’re in when Curtis heads into the past on the on0rusing White in the box but the flag saves Posh.

Posh with the opportunity to break, instead of going for the corner Ward chooses to run down the middle and find the overlapping Mason. His ball back is poked over to Eisa on the right of the box from Brown and ballooned into the car park, not sure if that was a shot or cross.

Burrows replaced by Blake-Tracy, Another defensive change.

Curtis shoots from 30 yards, easy for Pym to catch. All came from butler badly misjudging a dropping ball though. Posh not keeping the ball up top and it keeps coming back.

Eisa offside from the ball in.

White bets booked for going through the back of Mason, welcome to the game.

Mason replaces Reed. He will go where he did against Hull, holding midfield.

Phwoar, this is not nice now, another teasing ball in from Curtis, Posh scramble it away as it looks to have fallen for Harness, only as far as Whatmough inside the box who shapes to shoot but there appears Frankie Kent to get a high boot to the ball and take away what would surely have been a goal.

Pompey corner.

A bit end to end now and I think a few weary legs are creating more space, Hiwula shoots from 25 yards out, well held up high by Pym.

Wow how has that stayed out, Ward shows great footwork on the right of the box, cuts inside and squares to Burrows for what looks to be a tap-in for Burrows but Bolton flings himself to the ball first, what a brilliant tackle.
