Liam lapped up a special occasion for Peterborough United who stormed into the third round of the Carabao Cup
Recent signing Liam Kelly lapped up a special occasion as Peterborough United walloped Watford 5-1 in a Carabao Cup tie at Vicarage Road.
The 30 year-old pulled the midfield strings during an impressive all-round team performance as Posh stormed into tonight’s third round draw.
Posh were 2-0 up at half-time before a run of three goals in 13 second-half minutes settled the contest with a quarter of the game to go.
“It was a special occasion for the club, the players and the fans,” Kelly told the Posh Plus service. “To score five at a Championship club against a good team was a great effort. I know they made a lot of changes and they had a young back four we felt we could get at, and it just turned into a great night for us.
"There wasn’t a lot of pressure on the ball so we could just go out and play our stuff. You have play at a quicker tempo when you go up against stronger sides, but that’s exactly how the gaffer wants us to play anyway.
"The combinations we have in the side are very good. Bolu Shofowoke is perfect for us midfielders as he likes to stretch the pitch, as do the other wingers, and we have Harry Leonard who can hold the ball up and stretch the pitch.
"We said at half-time we wanted to use the momentum from the first-half so the third goal was crucial. We then made a lot of changes on 65 minutes, but the lads who went on stuck at it well. We were disappointed to concede a goal, but it was still a perfect night for us.
“The fans were fantastic as well. To get over 1,000 out on a Tuesday night was outstanding and now I hope they are rewarded with a big Premier League side in the next round.
"We will see where the draw takes us but the focus now is on Saturday.”
Posh are at Blackpool for a League One game on Saturday.
