Injury problems pile up for Peterborough United as captain ruled out for several weeks

Peterborough United have received more bad injury news.

Captain and key midfielder Hector Kyprianou will be out of action for 7-8 weeks after a scan on a hamstring injury suffered at Wigan Athletic showed significant damage.

And manager Darren Ferguson believes Kyprianou was his own worst enemy on the night.

“It was strange to see Hector pick up such an injury,” Ferguson said. “He’s one of the fittest players at the club and off the pitch he is really professional and looks after himself. But he felt a twinge in his hamstring after 10 minutes and he really should have come off straight away, but he tried to carry on and made the problem worse. If he’d come off straight away he would probably have missed two weeks, but it’s a bad one and now he will be out for 7-8 weeks.

"It’s a blow for him and for us, but as always we will just get on with things. We’ve been down to the bare bones a bit this season and it’s becoming more of a challenge.”

Striker Bradley Ihionvien will also miss Tuesday’s EFL Trophy game at home to Stevenage as a niggly calf problem won’t go away. He could be back for Saturday’s League One match at home to Rotherham United. Jadel Katongo, Chris Conn-Clark and full-back Rio Adebisi are other long-term absentees.

Archie Collins is suspended from that game, but is available tomorrow. Ferguson is expected to leave him out though so Saturday’s expected midfield pairing Ryan De Havilland and Donay O’Brien-Brady can have some time together.

Joel Randall and George Nevett will start the game. Sam Curtis is away on international duty with Ireland Under 21s.
