Heavily reinforced Peterborough U21s pick up victory as Danny Ormerod gets on the scoresheet

Danny Ormerod was on target for the Peterborough United U21s in a 4-0 victory over Luton Town on Monday evening (September 7).

Ormerod has impressed in a couple of cameos off the bench in League One matches but was given the chance to build up his match fitness as Posh travelled to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town in the Premier League Cup.

Ormerod was joined in the starting line up by Evan Weir, Chris Conn-Clarke and fellow new signing Harry Ashfield. Youngsters Lucca Mendonca and Patryk Sykut also started alongside the transfer-listed Donay O’Brien-Brady.

Weir completed 45 minutes, Ormerod and Ashfield got an hour under their belts and Conn-Clarke lasted 87 minutes in the comprehensive victory.

Posh have begun their Professional Development League campaign with three straight victories after previous successes against Swansea and QPR.

Harry Ashfield’s header forced a strong save from the Luton ‘keeper in the first half an hour and that was swiftly followed by Sykut seeing a header crash back off the bar. Conn-Clarke also saw an effort pushed round the post before Ormerod grabbed the opener with five minutes of the half to play.

He was picked out perfectly by an Evan Weir cross.

He could have doubled his tally in the closing seconds of the half but also saw an effort come back off the crossbar.

Just five minutes into the second half, Sykut fired into the corner to make it 2-0 and continue his fine form to start the season. His third in three games for the U21s.

Kurtis Simmons replaced Ormerod after 60 minutes and had to wait only three minutes to grab a goal himself; tapping home a rebound after Conn-Clarke had seen an effort saved.

The rout was complete in the 82nd minute when Ejiro Abbey slotted into the net after Conn-Clarke’s fine pass.

Posh are next in action against Bristol City on Tuesday (September 15, 1pm).
