Almost perfection from Peterborough United, Lisbie racking up superb numbers quicker than EMC and Boyd, the need to look after top players

It was a clean sheet and a goal from a corner away from a perfect afternoon for Peterborough United.

Six goals against Wigan Athletic courtesy of some ruthless finishing, a winger who is threatening to make Posh fans forget about Ephron Mason-Clark and Kwame Poku, a 35 year-old centre-back who turned into Cristiano Ronaldo for 10 minutes, and a first goal in professional football for a striker signed from Biggleswade United and who last scored a goal for Eastbourne Borough in National League South.

Is there anyone out there who still doesn’t rate the management/coaching skills of Luke Williams and Ryan Harley? Surely not.

TALKING POINTS FROM POSH 6, WIGAN 1…

1) Kyrell Lisbie is quickly racking up some impressive stats. His hat-trick means it’s now nine goals in 28 League One appearances for the fleet-footed winger following his arrival from National League Braintree. He has 13 goals in all competitions in his first season in the Football League. As a comparison I looked at two top-class Posh wingers who pitched up at London Road from non-league football. Ephron Mason-Clark scored four goals in his first 28 EFL appearances for Posh after moving from Barnet, while George Boyd scored six goals in his first 28 Posh EFL games, and they were all in League Two. Lisbie was the recipient of two assists from veteran centre-back Tom Lees who continues to play out of his skin. The defender needs another contract sorting, one with a coaching clause if necessary, if Posh have time while batting away the inevitable summer bids for Lisbie.

2) To the surprise of no-one who has met an intelligent and modest manager, Luke Williams proved to be a big hit at the Posh fans’ forum last week. He accepts more blame than praise which must be a fairly unique trait in his profession. He spoke eloquently with insight even when discussing things that haven’t worked out for him, like set-pieces. Surprisingly given the final scoreline it took Posh a while to win a corner on Saturday (remarkably the final corner count was 10-3 in Wigan’s favour), but all three were swung into dangerous areas with James Dornelly hitting the crossbar from the final one with a thumping header. If Posh start scoring from corners Williams might be on course for a freedom of the city prize given everything else he’s managed to achieve since arriving with the club in a desperate position.

3) Given the lack of transfer window activity Posh must look after centre forward Harry Leonard as much as they can. It made perfect sense to whip him off as soon as he’d scored from Jimmy Jay-Morgan’s precise cross to put Posh 4-1 yesterday. He’s the last person Posh can afford to lose, or so we thought. On came Pemi Aderoju to promptly score his first EFL goal and it was no tap-in. There was still much to do after Brandon Khela’s superb run and pass, but Aderoju just chopped back inside the last defender and side-footed the ball past League One's best goalkeeper. It’s dangerous to read too much into substitute appearances, but the confidence hit for the 21 year-old will be huge.

4) Posh also need to look after Matt Garbett. He has a World Cup on his horizon so it would be unfair to ask him to take any risks with his fitness. Garbett is like Archie Collins insomuch he will give 100% commitment to the cause no matter the state of a game. Sometimes players need to be protected from themselves and Posh will have decent midfield cover when Ben Woods returns.

5) The London Road playing surface looked a bit worse for wear yesterday which will make playing out from the back an even more hazardous exercise, especially against the strong pressing teams. Posh coped well enough yesterday, although the Wigan goal was a gift presented by Carl Johnston’s belief he had turned into Harrison Burrows and tried to trick past a player in his own area. Johnston is a very likeable player though and a captain who leads by example by playing at full pelt for 90 minutes.

6) Just over five hours after the final whistle Wigan parted company with head coach Ryan Lowe with the team 22nd in League One. ‘The Latics’ looked like a team who needed a change of leader and they are only two points from safety so all is not yet lost. Eight League One managers have now lost their jobs this season including legendary Posh boss Darren Ferguson.
