Peterborough Sports boss wants to give fans something to cheer in final home match after 'poor' season

Peterborough Sports boss Michael Gash wants to give the fans at PIMS Park something to cheer after a poor season.

Sports host AFC Telford United in their final home game of the season on Saturday. The match will also be the first time Sports have taken to the pitch after their relegation from the National League North was confirmed on Monday.

Sports finish their season with away trips to Worksop Town and Hereford so Gash wants to see his side give their all to offer some hope and to continue to build into next season back in the Southern League Premier Division Central after four seasons away.

Telford have seen a push for the play-offs falter in recent weeks after picking up just one win in their last seven games. They were currently six points adrift of the play-off places having played a game more.

Due to a resurgence in form for all of the teams around them, not even a win will move Sports up from 23rd place in the table as they currently trail Alfreton and Hereford by six points, having played more games than both of those sides. Sports have won just one of their last 15 matches and taken two points from their last five.

Gash has insisted the news of relegation will not affect his preparations though. He said: “It’s gut wrenching news that we have to take but nothing changes for me in my mindset and how I apply myself and how I’d expect my players and staff to apply myself.

“Everyone is fully focused on the game ahead wanting to win a game of football and hopefully we can put on a show for our last game at PIMS Park this season and start to look forward to next season, finishing with a push to take it into next season.

“We have to show that we still want to win games. We want to start quickly and give the fans something to cheer about after what has been a poor season collectively.

"They can be very dangerous going forward but, when we are on it, so can we. We look forward to a competitive game.

"I will not end the season on a whimper. That doesn’t mean you have to win all three of these games but when you cross that white line you give 100% for yourself and for your teammates and for the badge you wear.”

Max Booth is a doubt for the game after missing training on Thursday night through illness. Sports could also could be without Elliott Whitehouse who was sent off in Good Friday’s draw with King’s Lynn Town, with the club waiting to hear the result of an appeal.
