Peterborough Sports are relegated after a tame defeat

Peterborough Sports have been relegated from National League North.

After four seasons of fighting against the odds in a division full of former Football League clubs with full-time status, it ended with a tame 2-0 defeat at Oxford City.

Sports are now 10 points from safety with just three matches to play.

Few chances were created in the first half by either team with hosts; captain Josh Ashby forcing Sports ‘keeper Peter Crook into action with a long-range strike before home number one Max Metcalfe denied Mark Jones and Kaine Felix in quick succession on the half-hour mark.

City finished the half strongly as Ashley Hemmings found Zac McEachran inside the box, but Anthony Stewart did well to put him off and the striker fired wide of the target.

After the break Sports had chances to break the deadlock as Dan Jarvis curled an effort just wide of the post before Sam McLintock saw an effort deflect inches over the woodwork.

The home side opened the scoring just after the hour mark as they advanced on the counter attack from a Turbines corner, with Matty Taylor slotting in at the far post following an inviting ball from the left from Ewan Clark. Taylor (36) is a former Oxford United player who has enjoyed a long professional career.

City sealed the win in injury time as Clark tapped into an empty net after Jack Bearne rounded Crook on the edge of the box.
