Late setback for Spalding United, big win for Bourne Town, March Town held, FC Peterborough beaten

Leaders Spalding United missed a glorious chance to heap even more pressure on the chasing pack in the Southern Premier Division Central.

‘The Tulips’ looked set to move seven points clear when Jack Roberts put them 2-1 up at home to Worcester City with just seven minutes to go. That likelihood increased when the visitors were reduced to 10 men, but they gained an unlikely point with a terrific equaliser in added time.

Spalding swarmed all over Worcester in the early stages, but couldn’t find a goal until Yusifu Cessay headed a Roberts cross home on 36 minutes. Worcester equalised on 72 minutes which led to a dramatic finale. Spalding are now five points of second-placed Harborough Town who have four games in hand, the first of which is at lowly Stourbridge on Wednesday.

Relegation-haunted Stamford AFC were without a game on Saturday, but travel to fifth-placed Redditch United on Monday.

Bourne Town jumped out of the Northern Premier Midlands Division relegation zone by completing a league double over Racing Club Warwick. A splendid individual goal from Robbie Ellis 20 minutes from time sealed a 1-0 win.

Second-placed March Town slipped three points behind leaders Nuneaton Town in the United Counties Premier Division South after an exciting 3-3 draw at Newport Pagnell. March led 1-0, trailed 2-1 and then led 3-2 before accepting a point. Florian Tsaguim scored twice for ‘The Hares’ with Rio Henson also netting.

Yaxley went down 3-1 at Leicester Nirvana after a goal from Dimagio Robinson had them level at the break.

In the Premier Division North there were defeats for Deeping Rangers at leaders Boston Town, for fading Blackstones and for Wisbech Town who have signed former Peterborough United youth team centre-back Connor Peters from Bourne.

FC Peterborough lost a battle of two top-five teams in Division One North of the Thurlow Nunn League 2-1 at Wroxham Reserves. David Yisah scored a penalty for the city side who were unhappy one of the home side’s goals was allowed to stand.

Thomas Papworth-Boston scored a screamer in Whittlesey Athletic’s 2-2 home draw with Stanway Pegasus. Jack Carter also netted, while Louie Garner scored both goals in a 2-2 draw for Holbeach United at Needham Market Reserves.
