Honours were shared between Peterborough Sports and Stamford AFC on derby day, Spalding beaten, FC Peterborough, Yaxley and March Town all win

Honours were shared on derby day at Pims Park as Peterborough Sports and Stamford AFC fought out a 1-1 draw in the Southern Premier Division Central.

In truth it was a result that did neither side any favours even if the point was enough to move the city side up a place to sixth. The visitors had more reason to be satisfied as it was just a fifth point in 16 games of a difficult season.

Stamford took a 13th minute lead when Sports midfielder Lewis Hillard turned a cross from Mark Jones into his own net. Jones was a long-serving Sports striker, a key man as they surged through the divisions.

Lewis Green then had to make two decisive challenges to stop Ryan Thomas and Luca Alonzi adding a quick second goal before Sports found a leveller just past the half hour mark. Luca Miller was the scorer after the visiting defence failed to deal properly with a Ben Hart cross.

The hosts dominated the rest of the half with Miller firing just wide and Stamford defender Aaron Cashmore making a crucial tackle to thwart Sports’ top scorer Leon Lobjoit.

Sports sent on Sydney Ibie and Harvey Williams at the break and the pair almost combined instantly to give their side the lead, but the latter’s shot was we saved by Stamford goalkeeper Joe Bailey.

Sports kept the pressure on, but Ibie, Williams, Lee Watkins and Lobjoit just failed to hit the target before Jones missed a great late chance from close range for Stamford.

Elsewhere Spalding United squandered the boost of a third minute goal from Dion Sembie-Ferris to go down 2-1 at AFC Telford United in National League North.

The home side had taken the lead before the break and held on in the second-half to record a third straight win. Telford are now 11th, a place above Spalding.

FC Peterborough and Yaxley were both successful in Premier Division South of the United Counties League. Dom Sanha and Toby Marumahoko scored in a 2-1 win for the city side over Moulton at the Millfield Autoparts Stadium, while Antonio Mendy and Scott Waumsley were on target for ‘The Cuckoos’ in a 2-0 victory at Coton Green.

Deeping Rangers and Blackstones occupy two of the three bottom spots in Premier Division North after defeats today at the hands of high fliers Sherwood Colliery (0-1) and Belper United (1-3) respectively. Harry Peasgood scored for Stones.

March Town are six points clear at the top of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division after a comfortable 3-0 home success over fifth-placed Stowmarket Town. Mid-table Wisbech Town lost 2-0 at Haverhill Rovers.

There were Division One North defeat for FC Parson Drove, Holbeach United, Netherton United and Whittlesey Athletic.

It was a fourth defeat in a row in all competitions for sixth-placed Netherton who have welcomed midfielder Charlie Pywell back from Wisbech.
