Home truths delivered to 'dire' Peterborough Sports who have an immediate chance to put things right

Peterborough Sports boss Mark Ducket admitted his side delivered a dire display in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with neighbours Stamford AFC at PIMS Park.

The visitors picked up just a fifth point of the Southern Premier Division Central season and almost nicked the points in the final moments through former Sports striker Mark Jones.

The draw actually lifted Sports up a place to sixth and they have an immediate chance to jump up to fifth on Monday when they visit mid-table Redditch United. The rest of the division play on Tuesday including Stamford who host Needham Market (7.45pm kick off).

"We were dire and it was a really bad game,” Ducket told Peterborough Community Radio. “Fair play to Stamford who came with a game-plan that worked, but we didn’t show the bravery and courage that has been a big part of our recent run. It was really disappointing.

"I addressed it in the dressing room after the game. The players received a few home truths and some of the bigger egos needed bringing down a peg or two and hopefully it’s the wake-up call we needed.

"We had been so good in the week, but there were a lot of emotions attached to this game and sometimes that can affect performances. Teams might look at us now and think we have a soft underbelly/

"We are lucky we have another game straight away. All the games are big in this relentless division and the next one is now a really important one. We all know where we need to be at the end of the season.”

Sports were cheered by a first goal of the season for injury hit Luca Miller and senior players are now coming back from injury and suspension. Full-back Ben Hart faces another spell on the sidelines though after picking up an ankle injury which necessitated an ankle injury.

Yesterday’s match attracted a decent crowd of 499.

"We have been trying to promote the club and we’ve done that partly by going on a good run of form,” Ducket added. “I’m disappointed we couldn’t get over the line for the fans. We will try and make things right for them on Monday.”
