Werrington clinched their first Hunts Indoor Cricket League title in emphatic fashion

Werrington clinched their first Hunts Indoor Cricket League title in emphatic fashion.

The city club needed to win their final match against Wansford to seal top spot and that was never in doubt as they stormed to a 134-run win, a massive margin in a 10-over match.

Opening batsman Mateeh Ur Rehman and captain Muhammad Toseeq both retired under ECB rules with 25 each, before Mudassar Shafiq and Saad Ashraf did the same.

Ur Rehman and Toseeq then returned with more brutal batting and then retired again finishing unbeaten respectively on 52 and 50. There was plenty of boundary hitting for Werrington with seven fours and 17 sixes recorded with captain Toseeq contributing six sixes.

Werrington’s imposing 205-2 from 10 overs was the highest team total of the season, and one of the highest scores recorded in the league’s long history.

Werrington were just as clinical in the field with wickets being shared around along with three direct hit run outs. Toseeq was again in the thick of the action with two direct hits.

Both Werrington and AK11 finished the season with six wins from seven matches, with the head-to-head match between the two teams earlier in the season the tie-breaker.

Werrington will now go and represent Huntingdonshire in the ECB National Indoor Competition in February, 2027. Last year’s winners AK11 will represent the county in the nationals this year.

AK have a bye to Regional Finals Day at Uppingham School on March 8 when they will face Cherry Willingham from Lincolnshire who have won the Lincoln Indoor League 11 times in the last 13 years.

AK were awarded their final match of this season as Burghley Park couldn’t raise a team.

Pak Azad jumped ahead of Ufford Park to finish the season in third with a narrow 17-run win against Bretton. Fardin Satari (36) and Haroon Bashir (30) batted best for Pak Azad with Neil Buckingham top scoring with 25 for Bretton.

Ufford Park lost by 22 runs to Hampton. Javad Ghani struck three fours and two sixes in his 44 for Hampton with Ali Shehzad offering most support with 39 as the city side posted 143. Saj Ali (37) and Jonathan Bigham (28no) top scored for Ufford.

Final standings (all played 7): 1 Werrington 18pts, 2 AK 11 18pts, 3 Pak Azad 15pts, 4 Ufford Park 12pts, 5 Hampton 9pts, 6 Bretton 6pts, 7 Wansford 3pts, Burghley Park 0pts.

Hunts are also running an Indoor Youth League at The Peterborough School, a competition last held 15 years ago.

Teams start on 100 runs and bat in pairs for four overs. There are five balls in an over, with wides and no-balls each counting as two runs. Every time a wicket falls, batsman change ends and five runs are taken from the batting teams total.

Ramsey enjoyed a successful start by playing twice and winning twice.
