According to the Met Office, temperatures dipped as low as -1 overnight but this is set to worsen over the weekend with forecasts predicting -3 on Saturday early in the morning and then as low as -4 right up until 9am on Sunday morning.

The weather warning, which covers much of the west of England, extending past Huntingdon and towards the city, states: “Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

“Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

“Likely some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.”

It adds that: “An area of sleet and snow is expected to move southeastwards across parts of England and Wales, lasting approximately 2 or 3 hours in any one place. Where snow falls, 1 or 2 cm is likely for some and perhaps as much as 5 cm snow possible in a few spots, especially higher ground of north Wales, northwest England and perhaps the northwest Midlands. “Some ice may form as a result of precipitation falling on to frozen surfaces and icy patches will also develop quickly as sleet and snow clears.”
