STORM WARNING: Met Office puts Peterborough on alert for thunder and lightning

More heavy rain and thunder storms could hit Peterborough today (Tuesday), the Met Office has warned.

A yellow storm warning has been put in place, lasting until 10pm tonight.

The warning says: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected during Tuesday, with some localised disruption possible

“What should I expect?

“There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus

“Some flooding of a few homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures, especially across the southeast of the area where highest rainfall most likely

“Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes

“Delays to train services are possible

“Some short term loss of power and other services is likely.”

The Met Office forecast is for the rain to hit this afternoon – with at least an 80 per cent chance of wet weather from 2pm until 7pm.

The storm warning comes after last month was one of the wettest on record in Peterborough, with heavy rain causing localised flooding and disruption.
