Meteorologist Trevor Pratt, from Peterborough Weather Watch, said it had already been a very wet September. He said: “It has been a very wet spell to say the least.

"I’ve recorded around 46mm of rain over past three days (up to 11am on Monday), but other places would have recorded a lot more than that.

"The local average is around 43mm for September (since 2006),but I’ve already recorded around 70mm this month.

"The reason for the wet weather is basically is 'warm' parcels of air, lifting into cooler air aloft, and that creates rain!! We have also 'imported' a fair batch of rain from the continent as well.

"There is a drier outlook for Tuesday. There will likely be some rain on Wednesday, but the timing of that is uncertain, and there is a cold front set to bring a band of rain on Thursday, with a cool theme at the end of week.”
