Gunthorpe Ridings has seen a number of serious accidents over the past couple of years.

Years of campaigning have paid off for a group of Liberal Democrat councillors after new speed cushions have been secured in Peterborough.

New speed calming measures are to be installed along Gunthorpe Ridings, between Paston Ridings and Gunthorpe Road.

Campaigning for the measures has intensified over the past couple of the years after a number of serious accidents along the road, including a red BMW ploughing through the front of a house, an overturned car and a speeding car that crashed into a lamppost and a fence, knocking both over.

"We are very lucky not to have had a fatality,” councillor Sandra Bond (Gunthorpe) told the Peterborough Telegraph.

Both Cllr Bond and her son Cllr Andrew Bond have pledged £5,000 from their combined Community Leadership Funds (each city councillor is given £3,000 a year to support projects in their ward), for this year and the next two years to install the speed cushions.

The cushions will be installed close to the bus stop at Mealsgate, close to Bowness Way as well as between Patterdale Drive and Nightingale Crescent.

"It became a case of how many accidents do we want to happen on that road? Something serious was going to happen.

Having spoken to residents, I have heard that a group of three young boys were standing exactly where the car hit the fence and the lamppost just moments before it happened and then it would have been a very different outcome, we have been lucky.

"The investment has been a lot but we felt that it is a project that had to be done. We could never live with ourselves if we did nothing and there was a fatality along the road.

“I am very pleased to get these secured, it is about time.

"It is a result of years of hard campaigning from the local Lib Dem team and I am really pleased to get them installed.

“Residents we have spoken to are over the moon as well.
