Serious accident closes A1 north of Peterborough

A serious accident has closed the A1 north of Peterborough and drivers are being warned diversions are in place as the road is likely to be closed for much of the morning.

Two lorries are involved on A1 Great North Road both ways between A607 (Harlaxton / Melton Mowbray Turn Off) and A151 (Colsterworth Services Junction). The road has been closed since around 6.30am.

Motorists have told the PT that traffic travelling north is already very slow moving on the approach to Colsterworth.

Long delays are likely on the approach to the closure, with additional journey times also expected on diversion routes. A Highways England statement said: “The A1 is closed in both directions between the A606 and the A607 near Easton due to a serious collision.

“Emergency services are on scene. Road users travelling northbound are advised to follow the solid circle diversion route:

“Exit A1 at A606 Stamford exit slip road.

“At the top of the slip road, turn left (west) onto the A606.

“Continue W/B along the A606 through the villages of Empingham & Whitwell until the A606/A6003/ B640 Oakham Bypass roundabout.

“At the roundabout, turn right (north-west) onto the A606 Burley Park Way on Oakham Bypass and straight over the A606/B668 roundabout, the Ashwell roundabout & the Railway Bridge Roundabout, then continue north to the Barleythorpe Roundabout.

“At the Barleythorpe Roundabout, turn right (north-west) & continue along the A606 through Langham & Burton Lazars to

Melton Mowbray. In Melton Mowbray, head north along Burton Street, then left (west) onto Leicester Street (one-way), then north along Wilton Road to the A606/A6006/A607 Wilton Road/Norman Way junction.

“At the junction, turn right (east) onto Norman Way & continue to the A607/B676 Thorpe Lane Junction.

“Turn left (north/east) onto A607 Thorpe Lane, heading out of Melton Mowbray.

“Continue along the A607 through the villages of Thorpe Arnold, Waltham on the Woulds, Croxton Kerrial & Harlaxton to the A1/A607 N/B slip road roundabout (Farmers Arms).

“Turn right at the roundabout onto the A1 northbound entry slip and rejoin the A1 northbound.

“Road users travelling southbound are advised for follow the hollow diamond diversion route which is the above in reverse.”

“Please allow extra time for your journey if travelling in the area or consider alternative routes.”
