New 20mph speed limits now in place close to Peterborough school
New 20mph speed limits have been installed in Peterborough
The restrictions have been put in roads that were previously 30mph in Werrington.
Councillors in Werrington and Gunthorpe have long been pushing for 20mph restrictions on Church Street and Amberley Slope.
The two roads are located close to Werrington Primary School. Local councillors have previously campaigned for the reduced speed limits but have said that the need for them has become more stark given council funding cuts.

These funding cuts have led to the axing of the previous school lollipop lady.
In June 2025, Peterborough City Council said that the decision was “one of a number of difficult decisions” it had to make in order to balance the budget, but assured that crossings and or speed restrictions such as 20mph zones would be in place at each of the schools affected.
A consultation to reduce the speed limit was held between December 2025 and January 2026.
Cllr John Fox said: “Outside of most schools there is a 20mph speed restriction and as we have just lost our very valued crossing lady, then safeguarding has to be our priority. I know you cannot legislate for irresponsible drivers but we need to try our best to combat them.”
The Lib Dem Gunthorpe and Werrington Focus Team added: “After many years of campaigning by your local Lib Dem Gunthorpe councillors and Werrington First councillors, it is great to see that the new 20mph speed limits have now been implemented.
“This is something residents have long called for, and we hope it will help improve road safety for pedestrians, cyclists and families living in the area.
“Thank you to everyone who supported the campaign and helped make the case for safer streets in our community.”
