The Vine pub, at Coates, staged a big open day - for the fourth year in a row - to help Maya Ratcliffe.

Maya, who is a full-time wheelchair user, has uncontrolled epilepsy as well as hydrocephalus (a build-up of fluid on the brain) and spina bifida (a gap or split in the spine).

Monique Hasselder, Maya’s grandmother, was full of praise for the pub, the fun day organisers Kris Lunn and Kerry Barker and the generosity of everyone who turned up - despite the weather.

“Because of the rain the day got off to a quiet start, but on the whole it went really well once the barbecue and the music started after lunch,” said Monique.

“The rain didn’t certainly dampen the spirits and just over £1,600 was raised.”

The money will go towards ongoing adaptations at the family home in Drybread Road, Whittlesey, where Maya lives with mum and dad,
Fay and Aaron, and brother Max.

Monique described Maya - a former Peterborough Telegraph Pride in Peterborough winner - as a “very independent little girl indeed.”

She added: “In the first year the pub’s fundraising paid for a new lightweight wheelchair for Maya and subsequently an extended front wheel to make it all-terrain, so she can go anywhere.

“The money has also paid for a specialised car seat, and ramps at the front and back of the house, to make it easier for Maya to get in and out in her wheelchair.

“It is now all about ‘futureproofing’ the house , and the money raised will help fund adaptations such as lower units in the kitchen, specially for disabled people, to help with her future independence as she grows up.”
