Plans for flats above former Peacocks store in Peterborough refused

Plans to create a development for new flats above a former Peacocks store in Peterborough have been refused.

In January, plans were submitted by Gujjar Investments Limited to create 15 one-bedroom flats on the first and second floors of 55-57 Bridge Street.

The building is home to the former Peacocks unit which closed in August 2025. The ground floor unit has been stripped and has remained vacant ever since.

Plans were put forward for seven flats on the first floor and eight on the second with a floor space ranging in size from 40 square metres to 56 square metres.

An application for prior approval for the development had been sought but this has been refused.

Planning officers raised concerns about nose concerns from nearby establishments such as The Met Lounge and requested further evidence to show that this could be mitigated.

The decision notice stated: “The noise impacts from adjoining and nearby commercial and entertainment uses have not been adequately assessed.

"The submitted noise report does not robustly evaluate entertainment noise from the Met Lounge and Bijou, fixed plant noise, or the implications of unknown party wall and floor construction and therefore cannot demonstrate that the proposed mitigation would achieve acceptable internal noise levels.”
