New plans have been submitted to convert a former Greek restaurant in Peterborough into housing have been submitted.

Plans were submitted to convert the top floor of Salamis Greek Taverna on 31 Broadway, which closed its doors on New Year’s Eve 2023, earlier this year but these were refused due to concerns about the lack of natural lights and pollution from neighbouring commercial units and restaurants.

New plans have now been submitted by M A Iqbal Architecture to retain the ground floor restaurant but for the above floor to become a two-bedroom flat.

The flat would be created with the addition of a first floor rear extension.

As part of mitigation proposals, a 1.5m sound barrier would be included towards the rear of the property after concerns were raised about noise from the neighbouring commercial units.

The application states that: “The ground floor level would be retained as a restaurant use and there are no identified sources of noise which would impact the proposed flat.

"Additional acoustic suspended ceiling will be provided from ground floor ceiling level. The floor layout shows existing fenestration and the alterations to implement the proposed change of use would enable adequate natural daylight to all the main habitable spaces contained within.

"It is believed that the proposal will provide a positive contribution to the area whilst satisfying the requirements of future users. Whilst we understand that every project is determined based on its own merits, this application is not substantially different from approved schemes in the local area.”

The application can be viewed on Peterborough City Council’s planning portal, reference 24/01275/FUL.
