Green Party win Fletton and Woodston by-election in Peterborough

The Green Party have won the Fletton and Woodston by-election in Peterborough.

The Green Party candidate Katherine Sharp secured victory by a margin of 185 votes over her nearest competitor from Reform in the result that was announced at Sand Martin House on Thursday night (July 16).

The by-election was called when Councillor Daisy Blakemore-Creedon resigned her role a little over two weeks after the May elections. Blakemore-Creedon was elected at the age of 18 in 2024.

It was the second Green gain in the ward this year after Ed Murphy returned to the city council in the May elections.

The third seat in the ward is held by Reform Group Leader Andrew O’Neil, who himself won his seat in a by-election in February.

The turnout was significantly down on the 34.5% in May and even on the February by-election in which 25.2% of those eligible cast a vote. On Thursday, the turnout was just 20.9% (1,650 ballot papers, 3 rejected).

Following the 2024 elections, the ward was held by three Labour councillors but the make up has changed significantly since then following the resignation of Blakemore-Creedon as well as the sad passing of both Nick Thulbourn in December and Alan Dowson in January, both while still sitting councillors.

Councillor Blakemore-Creedon was an independent at the time of her resignation after resigning from the Labour party in 2025.

The updated make up of the council is:

Conservative 13, Labour (and Co-operative) 11, Liberal Democrat 8, Peterborough First 8, Independent 8, Green 7, Reform 5.
