Firm vision to be set out for Peterborough's Embankment in summer 2027

Peterborough City Council has pledged to publish a firm vision for the city’s Embankment in summer 2027.

Visions for the future of the large open space have been long ongoing with plans currently being drawn up for a new Youth Zone to be constructed next to the Key Theatre, a new pedestrian bridge being constructed to link the Embankment to Fletton Quays and plans also progressing for a new ‘Sports Quarter’ which will house the new Regional Pool.

Cllr Qayyum added that the council were planning a ‘sensitive development’ of the site amidst criticism from groups such as 'Save the Embankment’ who raised concerns regarding the loss of public green space in the heart of the city.

Cabinet Member for Growth and Regeneration, Councillor Numan Iqbal discussed the matter of the Embankment further at the full council meeting on Wednesday (July 29).

In response to a question from Councillor John Howard regarding when a firm and definitive vision for the embankment would be published, Cllr Iqbal said: “An extensive engagement exercise took place between December 2025 and April 2026 seeking views from the public, businesses and stakeholders regarding what they wanted from the city centre including the Embankment.

“This is being used for the creation of the development framework for the city centre.

“We are working with the Environment Agency to review the ability to offer and manage mooring along the Embankment and we are facilitating the completion along Fletton Quays.

“We expect all of this work will be complete by Spring 2027 and a firm vision for the Embankment can be agreed in early summer 2027.”
