Plea for people to stop open water swimming in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire

A plea has been made for people to stop open water swimming in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "This week Cambridgeshire Constabulary have had several reports of people swimming in beauty spots across the county.

"Please resist the temptation to swim in open water, it's often colder than expected with potential hazards hidden below the surface.

"Cold water shock can cause you to panic, putting you in danger. If you do end up in the water, remember - #FloatToLive."

Public swimming pools are currently closed due to the coronavirus.

The fire service has run past campaigns on the dangers of open water, including its #RememberRony campaign which launched in May 2015 after Huntingdon schoolboy Rony John died while playing with friends in the Great River Ouse.
