Village pub’s exchange for the community

Pub landlord John Lawrence is making the most of the enforced closure by doing jobs inside and outside the Blue Bell on Church Street in Werrington originally scheduled for later in the year.

But it was while having a clear out at home, and with no charity shops open, that he came up with a novel way of putting a huge pile of books to use - he left them outside the pub for passers-by to take and enjoy.

And it went down so well that for the last three weeks, people out on their daily walk have been adding to the collection of books, jigsaws, DVDs and games, as well as carrying things off home.

John said: “It has been fantastic. People have been sharing photos on Facebook of items being put to use, and others commenting about being pleased things have gone to a good home.”
