The stormy end to the week is a result of a strengthening jet stream, with forecasters closely monitoring the exact track of the low pressure system.

Current forecasts suggest a deep low pressure system will pass through central and southern parts of England on Friday, presenting the possibility of Peterborough experiencing some severe gusts.

Depending on the strength of the system, it could become the Met Office’s first named storm of the autumn.

Matt Taylor, the BBC’s Lead Weather Presenter, said: “Weather models suggest there is the potential for the jet stream to guide a deep area of low pressure across the UK by Friday.

“In addition to heavy rain, gales or even severe gales will be wrapped around the deep low.

“At the moment most computer models take the centre of the low pressure system across the south of the UK.”

According to the Met Office’s rain radar, the heaviest rain could hit Peterborough in the early hours of Friday morning.

Current models suggest as much as 16mm of rain per hour could fall in the worst affected areas.
