Revealed: Thousands of fines handed to drivers misusing disabled parking bays in Peterborough

More than 9,200 fines have been issued across Peterborough to drivers misusing disabled parking bays over the past six years - according to new data.

The figures, obtained via a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, also reveal the city’s hotspot areas for the misuse of disabled parking bays.

In Peterborough, a total of 9,259 fines were issued by Peterborough City Council (PCC) between 2019 and 2024. These figures do not include cases of disabled parking bay misuse in private car parks, such as those owned by retail companies.

Here’s how the number of fines from PCC have varied year-on-year:

• 2019: 2,185

• 2020: 965

• 2021: 849

• 2022: 1,761

• 2023: 1,850

• 2024: 1,649

The findings revealed the areas around the city where enforcement has been most active.

The hotspot areas for Blue Badge bay misuse (2019–2024) are:

• Lincoln Road, Millfield - 2,983 fines

• St. Peters Road - 752 fines

• Stone Lane - 747 fines

• Park Road - 576 fines

• Wentworth Street - 531 fines

The figures were obtained by a Freedom Of Information request made by Evans Halshaw.

Julie Wallman, Evans Halshaw Divisional Marketing Director, commented: “Disabled parking bays exist to ensure safe and accessible travel for people with limited mobility, whether they’re heading to a supermarket, medical appointment, or just going about their day.

“When drivers use these spaces without a Blue Badge, it reduces availability for those who genuinely need them.

“These figures show just how common this issue is across Peterborough and the rest of the UK, and highlight the importance of keeping accessible spaces available, particularly as more people rely on mobility solutions to support independent living.”
